The towering Mount Szafranówka over Szczawnica is a good place to start hiking in the Pieniny or the Beskidy. The local trails are not only suitable for short, one-day trips, but are also an important part of longer routes leading to the Polish and Slovak Pieniny, and the Beskidy.
Tourists fond of long hikes often choose their starting point to be the Pieniny Mountains. Don’t miss the beautiful cliffs overlooking the winding Dunajec and unique mountain landscapes. Must-sees are Sokolica Mount (where there’s a pine growing over the precipice – the “flagship” of the Pieniny Mountains) and the Three Crowns with the viewing gallery at the top.
Szafranówka and Palenica are also frequent points of long-haul runs. Tourists depart from Němcová, Radziejowa or Eliaszówka, heading to Piwniczna and Krynica. Many people pass Szafranówka going towards Czorsztyn and Niedzica, and passing through Lubań they can get to Gorce. All year round shelters and huts are open for tourists, and everyone can find lodging and something warm to eat. Accommodation can also be found in private houses and hotels in the neighbouring towns.
Szczawnica is another place for less experienced tourists. The chairlift running throughout the year to Mount Palenica makes reaching the peaks easier. You can go up with the whole family and move from there through the gentle approach to Szafranówka, where the blue trail will lead you in the direction of the shelter under Durbaszka and the charming Homole Gorge. On the other side, the trail descends to the valley of the Dunajec River, where the beautiful Orlica shelter is situated. You can continue your walk through a wide promenade along the river. It is used not only by pedestrians but also by cyclists.
