Before you set off for Kasprowy
Being in Zakopane without getting to the top of Kasprowy is like going to the seaside and not soaking your feet in the water. Are you on holiday or are have you come to the capital of the Polish Tatras on business? You simply must not miss out on such an opportunity - go to the top! Our guide will leave nothing to chance!
Tickets, please!
Before you get to the cableway, you have to get yourself a ticket. Many tourists buy them over the counter at the lower cableway station, hence there is often a long queue of passengers waiting there. Do not waste your time; buy your tickets in advance from the ticket machines in Zakopane, online (www.pkl.pl) or at customer service points (Krupówki, at the lower station to Gubałówka and Kasprowy).
Tickets for the cableway also provide entrance to the Tatra National Park. Children's pushchairs travel for free!
Gosh, it's blowing a gale!
Heavy winds have thwarted your plans? Sometimes the cableway is not available due to heavy wind (all for the safety of tourists). If you have a ticket, and the wind has nearly taken your head off, you are welcome to return your ticket. You will receive a full refund. Unfortunately, you cannot win with Mother Nature.
Where is the lower cableway station?
Beautiful weather, got your ticket? Ready for a hike in the Tatras? Time to go to Kuźnice, where the lower station of the cable car to Kasprowy is located. Kuźnice cannot be reached by car (the road is closed to traffic), but public transport is available (the bus stop is at the cableway). You can also go for a walk - it takes approx. 40 minutes (from Rondo Jana Pawła II). But be warned! You have to reach Kuźnice 15 minutes before the departure time indicated on the ticket!
What to do with the car?
The best solution is to leave your car in Zakopane (the nearest car park is located at ul. Karłowicza) and use public transport - the fastest way to get around the town. You can also park along ul. Bronisława Czecha.
What to bring to the top?
First of all, put on some good boots. Walking on the stones in flip-flops, sandals and heels is hardly pleasant. Be sure to take something warm to wear. The temperature at the top is lower by a few degrees than in Zakopane. Short sleeves may not be enough.
What is the weather up there? Will it be raining?
You can check the current forecast and a preview of the webcam at the top at www.pkl.pl (in the Cameras tab). It is also recommended to bring something that protects from the wind and rain. The weather in the mountains is capricious and changes rapidly...
What can I do at the top?
Admire the view, as it is truly amazing, drink tea or coffee in the restaurant located at nearly 2000 m above the sea level and get familiar with the Polish Tatras. You can explore the area with an audio-guide that will show you the beauty of the mountains. This is very convenient - no need to follow a group and strain your ears to hear anything. You may learn about the surroundings conveniently, at your own pace, simply by wearing headphones. The audio-guide can be rented at the lower station, or at www.pkl.pl
Travel by cable car
Once you enter the cableway, the adventure begins. The journey to Kasprowy Wierch (1987 m asl) takes about 15 minutes, with a change halfway (at Myślenickie Turnie). If you have a two-way ticket, your carriage will come back down in an hour and 40 minutes. That's plenty of time to explore the area!
Walking routes from Kasprowy - where to go?
If you do not want to exert yourself too much, we recommend getting to the top of Kasprowy and walking to the Meteo Observatory. It is the highest building in Poland! When the weather is nice, the trip will take approx. 20 minutes both ways.
If you're looking for longer routes, walk towards the top of the Beskid, which has a great vantage point onto Kasprowy, Dolina Cicha and Stawki Gąsienicowe. You will get there in approx. 30-40 minutes (the trip both ways will take approx. one hour). You can also walk down to Kuźnice. The trail is easy, with lot of routes to choose from, and there are hostels along the way, where you can relax. This route is slightly longer - you will reach the bottom in approx. 3 hours.
